Stones (mfg)
Some people bring stones to the Camino from home and leave them near a cross or path juncture to symbolize the shedding of a personal burden, relief of someone else’s, in memory of a loved one, or just because.
I brought several, not huge, in honor of, and for, some specific people, and have already left one at the spot below.
Though I did bring stones, I didn’t know how I would feel about the whole idea once I arrived. Superstitious or gimmicky? Fake or too trendy (when in Rome…)?
Well, none of that. I was purposeful about what rocks I brought and who I’ve carried with me, despite some self skepticism, and am so glad I did.
What I’ve discovered is that the stones others have left, and the hopes, sorrows, fears, joys, opportunities they represent have had a powerful impact on me.
At this time, in this world, where there is so much discord, this simple act of faith reminds me of what we all have in common.
In the end, we’re all on this crazy life journey together and we probably still have more in common than it sometimes seems. Everyone has a burden or two.
For now, I’ve got my stones and will lay them down as it seems right, with all the others. And I’ll offer a prayer, for the few, and for us all.
No matter how superstitious or gimmicky it may seem.
