Language, please! (bg)
Part of this whole Camino experience is communicating to our country hosts in their native Portuguese language. For the record, my 65 day streak on Duolingo has not come close to making me a worthy translator. Today the delightful Annabella picked us up in her taxi to take us to our hotel. She was more than willing to chat with us so long as we tried it in Portuguese. It was a hilarious and fun filled fail. I tried to convey what we saw in the farmlands and EVERY animal word I presumably learned was met with a good hearted expression of bewilderment. Annabelle wanted to keep at it and encouraged me to try a few more Portuguese words -Some which actually landed! We all laughed and kept it going all the way to the hotel when we asked he to pose with us for a quick pic. (Here)
What a great reminder of people’s instinctual drive to connect. Much love Annabelle.
We look forward to meeting more of your fellow country folk over the month.
